Mathematical Sciences

The Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a highly successful research partnership between Heriot-Watt and the Universities of Edinburgh. Producing consistently world-leading results, our research is ranked 3rd in the UK for Mathematical Sciences, based on the quality and breadth of our combined research in REF21*.
As one of the UK’s powerhouses in the Mathematical Sciences, our research-led teaching trains future mathematical scientists to contribute to mathematics in the UK, and to the global scientific community.
We work closely with the financial services industry via the Scottish Financial Risk Academy.
*The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. The combined ranking cited is calculated by combining the Times Higher Education’s ratings for the Maxwell Institute, both University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, based on Research Power, the quality and breadth of our combined research.
Please see below for more information about our research activities. If you are interested in doing a PhD at Heriot-Watt in any of the research areas listed below please visit the PhD Opportunities in Mathematical Sciences page, where you will find information on how to apply and on many of the research projects that we offer.
